Fundació Catalana Síndrome de Down (FCSD), far from pursuing new dedicated infrastructures for people with Down Syndrome (DS), believes that all people with learning disabilities can find a place in society, given
individualized support.
1989
- Launching the program of Job Integration for Young People with DS, “Projecte Aura”, which soon after becomes an independent association.
- I Ramon Trias Fargas Biennial Award for Research. Held regularly without interruption to date.
- III International Conference on Down Syndrome: Teenagers and young adults. Medical and psychopedagogical advances..
1988
- 1988 INSERSO Award for Photography, for the best set of four photographs entitled “Integration in Sports”.
- Youth Autonomy Program set up.
- Quarterly series of lectures for parents and professionals on health and psychopedagogical issues. Uninterrupted to date.
- Resource Centre created to promote awareness, lifelong training, research, and resource availability.
- The Library joins the Barcelona Coordination Group for Biomedical Documentation (Coordinadora de Documentació Biomèdica de Barcelona).
- The revue, Síndrome de Down, Treballs i Resums Científics per a Professionals, which begins to publish articles from various sources, including those authored by Down Medical Centre staff.
- Spanish-language edition of the FCSD bulletin first appears under the title Síndrome de Down, Artículos y Resúmenes Científicos. Sent to all paediatricians in Spain.
1987
- FCSD becomes a founding member of the European Down Syndrome Association (EDSA).
- Down Medical Centre set up under the aegis of the Catalan Government’s Health Department.
- Opening of the Specialised Toy Library. (Lending service suspended after 1997).
- Follow-Up Service authorised by the Catalan Department of Education and renamed the Psychopedagogical Follow-Up and Support Service, for grades 1-5 (age 6-10). Group therapy for DS children addresses such issues as identity, symbolic play, communication, relating to others, and autonomy. In 1991 gets extended to grade 7-9 (age 11-13) and subsequently change to Mainstream School Suport Service.
- II International Conference on Down Syndrome: The school-age child. Medical and psychopedagogical advances.
1986
- Spain’s First Preventive Health Program for people with DS developed, inspired by M. Coleman and P.T. Rogers’ Down Syndrome Checklist. Comprises 12 specialities, later increased to 18.
- Follow-up Service set up for DS children in mainstream schools.
- Síndrome de Down. Treballs i Resums Científics per a Professionals founded; the Catalan translation of Papers and Abstracts for Professionals. A free triannual bulletin sent to pediatricians all over Catalonia. Published without interruption; has evolved over time.
- First graduate course on Children’s Psychological Disorders. Study and Treatment. Held annually until 1990.
- First Parental Group Therapy started. Offered on the basis of demand.
1985
- The FCSD takes over the Begoña Raventós Documentation Centre (library), originally specialising in mental retardation and gradually extended to cover all kinds of mental, physical and sensorial disabilities, while focusing on DS-related topics. (Includes an exceptional translation service for foreign-language articles.) Updating the data collection and the technical procedure.
- The Catalan Department of Health and Social Welfare sets up its Early Intervention Sectorial Program, taking on board the FCSD Early Intervention Service which thereupon begins to attend for children with different kinds of disability. At first, the majority were children with DS, but the figures have been levelling off lately.
- I International Conference on Down syndrome: State of the art. Medical, psychological and educational advances. Held biennially.
