Human rights of persons with intellectual disabilities

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was approved in 1948, but many people, including those with intellectual disabilities, are still unable to exercise their rights on an equal footing with others and are still treated less than equitably in our society.

In 2006, the United Nations adopted a Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which states that persons with disabilities have the same rights as all others and are equal before the law.

In order to enforce and exercise their full rights and perform all their duties, individuals first need to be aware of their rights and duties. The FCSD is therefore organizing actions to raise awareness among people with intellectual disabilities and among the public at large regarding the rights and duties of this part of the population. These include the following:

- A cross-sectional training plan on human rights

In 2013 the FCSD has set up specific human rights training and capacity building for people with intellectual disabilities. The aim is to provide information and encourage reflection on how to exercise human rights.
Some of these rights-oriented actions cut across other FCSD activities, including self-advocacy groups, the Èxit21 blog, and adult education.

- ÈXIT21, the first blog coordinated and written by people with intellectual disabilities

Èxit21 arose out of an eagerly felt need to have a space in which to openly discuss our thoughts and interview persons of interest to all.

This is why Fundació Catalana Síndrome de Down set up this blog as a platform to broadcast the opinions of people with intellectual dis-ABILITIES.
